Farmers will be invited to talks with the Government

Prime Minister Dorin Recean said that he would invite the farmers to discussions with the Government. The announcement comes after the past few days, dozens of farmers from the south of the country, affected by the calamities of this summer, requested the establishment of a state of emergency and the organization of meetings with the President Maia Sandu and the Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu.

In a post on Facebook, the prime minister wrote that on Tuesday he will invite the representatives of the agricultural sector to discussions.

"On Tuesday I will invite the representatives of the agricultural sector to discussions. The government and farmers have a common mission in the coming period - to help those most affected by drought by realizing the real possibilities of the budget. Only such an approach - a wise one - will lead to solutions that help farmers", wrote Dorin Recean.

Farmers have threatened protests if their demands are not met in the next 10 days. According to the authorities, the requests of the farmers affected by the drought are being examined.

Over a thousand farmers are at risk of bankruptcy because of drought and loans, the executive director of the Association Forța Fermierilor Alexandru Bădărău told Radio Moldova.

"Farmers will protest if they do not have a dialogue with the president of the country Maia Sandu and the Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu for 10 days. I am confident that these protests will not only be in the Southern region of the country, the situation is very critical both because of the drought and of the Government's inaction or delayed actions from previous years. Over a thousand farmers could go bankrupt this year due to bank debts, most of those who risk going bankrupt are from the southern part of the country".

For his part, the state secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry, Vasile Șarban, said that the ministry will not establish a state of emergency in agriculture for the districts in the south of the country, but the authorities are identifying financial resources from external partners to help farmers.

According to the Association Forța Fermierilor, farmers in Cahul, Cantemir and Vulcănești districts have losses of about 135 million lei for the agricultural crops of the first group. Moreover, in the 3 districts in the south of the country over 19 thousand hectares were affected by drought.
