Moldova, Spain ease driver's licence exchange
Moldova and Spain have finalised the internal procedures for the implementation of the Agreement regarding the reciprocal recognition and conversion of driving licences, signed in Chișinău on April 18. The agreement will enter into force on September 29.
Under the agreement, Moldovan citizens residing in Spain will be able to convert their Moldovan licences for Spanish licences without additional tests, if these were obtained before the date of entry into force of the agreement.
For licences in the categories C1, C1+E, C, C+E, D1, D1+E, D and D+E, a skills test and a road test will be necessary.
In the case of licences issued after the entry into force of the agreement, these must be obtained in the state where the applicant has their legal residence. The exchanged driving licence will be returned to the authority that issued it.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reports that this is the first agreement with an EU state that allows for the digital verification of the authenticity of licences in real time between Moldovan and Spanish authorities, simplifying administrative procedures and reducing costs and time.
