This is the second case reported in the Republic of Moldova, with the first occurring in 2019. The man was bitten by mosquitoes during his stay in Italy, where the virus is present and several cases have been reported this year.

According to the source, the patient is receiving inpatient treatment, and his condition is satisfactory. The medical authorities in the Republic of Moldova are closely monitoring the situation and have issued recommendations to the public to prevent the spread of the infection.

Citizens are advised to avoid mosquito exposure by wearing long clothing and using repellent products. Installing mosquito nets on windows and doors can prevent insects from entering homes. It is also important to eliminate mosquito breeding sites, such as stagnant water in containers. If symptoms of West Nile virus infection, such as fever and headaches, appear, it is recommended to consult a doctor immediately. These measures are essential for reducing the risk of infection.

Across Europe, the West Nile virus transmission season is in full swing. By the end of July 2024, eight European countries, including Italy and Greece, had reported 69 cases of WNV infection, with eight resulting in deaths. In light of climate change, experts warn that the virus may spread to other regions of Europe in the future.
