Israel secures funds to settle debt with Moldova for Uman pilgrimage
The Israeli Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs have identified a budget source to cover the debt owed to the Republic of Moldova for services provided to Hasidic Jews last year.
This move is intended to ensure that the authorities in Chișinău will permit pilgrims travelling to Uman to pass through Moldovan territory this year, according to a report from israelinfo.
Israel owes Moldova more than 170,000 euros for the enhanced security measures and additional airport security implemented during last year’s Rosh Hashanah celebration.
The Chief Rabbi of Moldova, Pinchas Salzman, sent a letter to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, urging him to address the budget issue for this year’s Rosh Hashanah as well.
On Thursday, after nearly a year of no communication, Prime Minister Netanyahu and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had a conversation officially described by the Prime Minister's office as concerning "the situation in the region."
However, according to israelinfo, the central topic of the discussion was the Breslov Hasidic pilgrimage to Uman in October.
