A bridge in the German city of Dresden has collapsed

In the German city of Dresden, a large part of the Carola Bridge collapsed into the Elbe River on Wednesday morning. The city's heat supply was interrupted due to damaged heating pipes, writes tagesschau.de.

No one was injured in the crash. According to the firefighters, the affected part of the bridge is the one on which the trams run. A section about 100 meters long is in the Elbe and blocks the waterway of the river.

According to information provided by the city of Dresden, other parts of the bridge are in imminent danger of collapse.

The cause of the accident is still unclear. The police stressed that, so far, there are no indications of outside intervention. The entire area around the Carola bridge, including the Elbe waterway, the bike path on the Elbe remain completely closed.

The bridge dates back to the 19th century, and officials present at the scene said that one of the factors that could have contributed to the collapse is the corrosion of the metal structure, writes the German media.
