Stoianoglo invites Sandu to a neutral debate on elections

The Socialist Party’s candidate in the presidential elections, Alexandr Stoianoglo, has invited his main opponent, Maia Sandu, to a debate. He specified that he wishes for the debate to be conducted on a neutral platform, with each candidate represented by their own moderator.

Stoianoglo raised several accusations against the government, criticising the organisation of the elections. At the same time, he expressed his gratitude to the citizens who supported him. According to him, the debate will offer the public an opportunity to assess both candidates, their platforms, goals, and ideas.

The Socialist candidate emphasised that the debate should not be hosted on media platforms affiliated with the government but rather on neutral platforms, ensuring impartiality with one moderator from each side. The invitation was extended in Russian.

"I am convinced that, through this approach, our citizens will have more reasons to make balanced, well-considered, and responsible decisions," said Stoianoglo.

Stoianoglo also remarked that the Republic of Moldova has moved beyond internal confrontations and conflicts, asserting that the time has come for unity and the pursuit of common goals. "We must now find common ground to unite society and all political and civil forces in Moldova."

In a parallel statement, Stoianoglo reiterated his accusations against the current government regarding how the elections were managed. He also noted that he is counting on the support of various political groups, as well as opinion leaders, in the upcoming second round of the presidential elections.

"From this point forward, we must build a common foundation to unite society and all political and civil forces in the Republic of Moldova," he said. "Most Moldovans understand that our country needs justice, respect for all citizens, the rule of law, economic development, and job creation. And, of course, a clear direction for sovereign development within the European family of nations."

Stoianoglo further remarked that this should be the unifying agenda heading into the second round of the presidential elections.

Maia Sandu accepts debate invitation

Maia Sandu, Stoianoglo’s primary opponent, has also agreed to participate in a debate. "My team will get in touch with your team to discuss how we will organise the debate," Sandu said in response to Stoianoglo’s invitation.

As of yet, Alexandr Stoianoglo has not commented further on Sandu’s acceptance.

It should be noted that the second round of the presidential elections is scheduled to take place in two weeks. The necessity for a second round arose after none of the 11 candidates in the first round of voting secured at least half of the votes. Consequently, the two candidates who received the most votes—Maia Sandu, representing the Action and Solidarity Party (PAS), and Alexandr Stoianoglo, backed by the Socialist Party (PSRM)—will face off in the second round, which is expected to be held on November 3rd.
