Netanyahu defends UNRWA ban amid humanitarian crisis in Gaza

The Israeli parliament has recently voted to prohibit the operations of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) within the territory of Israel, a decision that could significantly constrain the agency's efforts in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

UNRWA, which supports Palestinian refugees, condemned this decision, describing it as a form of "collective punishment" that will exacerbate the situation for Palestinians reliant on their assistance, as reported by Politico.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu claimed that the legislation is justified by the involvement of certain UNRWA employees in the Hamas attacks on Israel on October 7, during which over 1,200 individuals lost their lives. While these accusations have been disputed, a UN investigation revealed that nine UNRWA employees might have connections to the attacks, leading to their termination.

The United States and several European nations have expressed their concerns regarding the ban, cautioning about potential humanitarian consequences. The situation in Gaza remains exceedingly grave, with international organisations warning of catastrophic food insecurity amidst ongoing Israeli military operations and access restrictions for aid.

Despite the ban, Netanyahu emphasised the importance of sustaining humanitarian assistance in Gaza to avert a humanitarian crisis and ensure long-term aid.
