Moldova referendum marks pivotal step toward EU integration
Through their vote in the October 20 referendum, the citizens of the Republic of Moldova were able to directly shape the constitutional future of the country.
This precedent paves the way for future referendums, yet the primary battle is only just beginning. Insights on this matter were discussed on the show In Context.
“We witnessed a milestone for our country when citizens introduced new constitutional norms,” remarked Mihai Mogîldea, an expert. “Through this decision, the Constitutional Court affirmed that citizens have a say in determining the country’s direction. This sets a positive precedent for future referendums in the Republic of Moldova.”
“Our battle has just begun. This is only an initial but crucial step, as it was essential for citizens to express their support for accession, allowing this popular backing to gain momentum, both domestically and within the EU,” noted Mihaela Sirițanu, a political economy expert.
The Constitutional Court confirmed the results of the October 20 national constitutional referendum. Accordingly, the High Court approved amendments to the Constitution to support the Republic of Moldova’s accession to the European Union. The decision was reached on October 31 after over two hours of deliberation. Magistrates Sergiu Țurcan and Vladimir Țurcan issued separate opinions, announced Domnica Manole, president of the Constitutional Court.
