Joint declaration, signed in Budapest. European leaders reaffirm their support for the Republic of Moldova
The European leaders from France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Romania and the United Kingdom, together with the President of the European Council and the President of the European Commission, reaffirmed their support for the Republic of Moldova and its European path. A joint statement in this sense was presented at the meeting of officials with President Maia Sandu that took place in Budapest.
"We congratulate the people of the Republic of Moldova for their commitment to democracy, freedom and the rule of law, demonstrated by the successful organization of free and fair presidential elections, with a high level of participation, in which President Maia Sandu was re-elected for a second term ", reads the text of the statement.
Also, the European leaders welcomed the result of the referendum that enshrined the accession to the European Union in the fundamental law of the Republic of Moldova.
They mentioned that the place of the Republic of Moldova is "in a free and democratic Europe". In addition, European leaders "strongly condemn documented attempts to influence election results through information manipulation, corruption and vote-buying schemes".
Officials welcome the success of the Republic of Moldova in repelling destabilization efforts by Russia and reaffirm their commitment to support the country in strengthening its resilience.
"We reaffirm our joint determination to support the Republic of Moldova in the defense of its sovereignty and territorial integrity, under its Constitution," the statement added.
In this context, the head of state wrote in a Facebook post that "through work, perseverance and friends from Europe, we will manage to develop the Republic of Moldova and continue to ensure the country's security".
We remind you that 47 heads of state and government are participating today in the fifth edition of the European Political Community Summit. At the summit, a Political Declaration on a New European Pact for Competitiveness is to be adopted, which will guide the activity of the European institutions, given the urgency to act decisively at the level of the European Union in addressing the current challenges.
