CNA imposed fines of 5 million for electoral bribery
As of November 8, the National Anticorruption Center (CNA) has imposed fines totalling about 5 million lei for "passive electoral bribery," based on reports submitted by the Police.
This offense, defined under Article 47 of the Contraventional Code, involves actions where a voter claims, accepts, or receives, directly or indirectly, goods, services, or any other improper benefits in exchange for influencing their vote. Any form of "payment" to influence voting behavior is now subject to severe penalties. Fines can range from 25,000 to 37,500 lei, depending on the severity of the offense.
The CNA has announced that it is still reviewing additional reports and will make decisions regarding those cases. It is important to note that individuals who commit this offence can be released from liability if they self-report or actively assist in uncovering or preventing acts of electoral bribery.
Article 471, introduced by Law No. 230 on July 31, took effect on August 15, and jurisdiction over these matters has been assigned to the National Anticorruption Center.
