Case of treason involving the head of the Parliament's legal service and a Border Police officer, sent to court
The Prosecutor's Office for Combating Organized Crime and Special Causes (PCCOCS) has filed charges of treason and conspiracy against the Republic of Moldova involving Ion Creangă, the head of the Parliament's legal service, as well as a suspended Border Police officer and his wife.
Ion Creangă was detained in July 2024 for engaging in conspiratorial communication with a former employee of the Russian embassy in Chisinau. He is accused of transmitting classified information related to national defense, the Republic of Moldova's collaboration with international security partners, and other sensitive topics.
According to PCCOCS prosecutors, Creangă was caught while he received $500 from an embassy representative, and an additional $1,100 was found at his home. His case was sent to the Chisinau Court based in Buiucani.
The suspended Border Police officer is also under investigation for having multiple conspiratorial meetings with the same Russian diplomat. Additionally, his wife is being investigated for complicity, she is accused of facilitating communication between her husband and the embassy employee.
Under the Criminal Code, treason is punishable by 15 to 20 years in prison, while conspiracy against Moldova carries a penalty of 5 to 10 years. Until a final judgment is rendered, all three defendants are presumed innocent.
