The Republic of Moldova joins the Protocol amending the Agreement establishing the OIV
The Republic of Moldova is set to join the Protocol amending the Agreement establishing the International Organization of Vine and Wine (OIV). This decision was approved by a vote of 78 deputies in two readings.
Joining this protocol provides an opportunity to enhance international collaboration in the field of viticulture. It will also foster new partnerships with leading research institutions and universities worldwide, benefiting all members of the National Office of Vine and Wine, according to MAIA's General Secretary, Sergiu Gherciu.
"With this step, the Republic of Moldova reaffirms its commitment to a modern and competitive wine sector, which is built on innovation and environmental respect," stated Gherciu.
The Republic of Moldova, as a member of the OIV, has actively participated in both bilateral and multilateral consultations regarding this document, with contributions from officials and experts in the field. Key changes include updating certification, labeling, and quality control procedures to meet market demands and support innovations in winemaking.
The new protocol strengthens protection measures for geographical indications and designations of controlled origins, which are essential for Moldova, given its numerous designations. This protection is vital for achieving international recognition and preventing fraud.
Additionally, the protocol contains provisions that assist member states in adapting to the impacts of climate change on viticulture.
The OIV is an intergovernmental organization that provides recommendations on technical and scientific aspects of viticulture and winemaking. Currently, the OIV has 49 member states and 17 observers. Notably, the Republic of Moldova became the first post-Soviet country to join the OIV in 1992.
