Human smuggling ring busted by Border Police
Border police from the Northern Regional Directorate, in cooperation with the Briceni Prosecutor's Office and Ukrainian authorities, dismantled an organised crime ring involved in human smuggling.
The ring recruited Ukrainian men, charging them $8,000 to $12,000 to smuggle them across the border. They guided these individuals through border regions and transported them towards the Moldovan-Romanian border.
On October 29, a Ukrainian man was arrested while trying to cross the Moldovan-Ukrainian border illegally. He admitted to paying $8,000 to the smuggling ring.
During questioning and a search of his phone, border police found strong evidence linking the man to the smuggling ring.
Ukrainian authorities have arrested the members of the smuggling ring and will seek to detain them.
Investigations are ongoing to fully understand the criminal activity and bring all those involved to justice. Meanwhile, they benefit from the presumption of innocence, as stipulated by law.
