Jānis Mažeiks: EU will support the Republic of Moldova to overcome a possible energy crisis
The European Union will stand by the Republic of Moldova to support it and overcome a possible energy crisis, said the Ambassador of the European Union to Chisinau, Jānis Mažeiks, in the “La 360 de grade” show on Radio Moldova. Previously, former Energy Minister Victor Parlicov claimed that 400 million euros would be needed annually to supply the Transnistrian region with natural gas this season. Janis Mazeiks said that they had heard of these figures and that discussions are to take place between Brussels and Chisinau regarding the support.
The official stressed that the priority is to avoid an energy crisis and continue the dialogue with Gazprom, so that it respects its contractual commitments to the Republic of Moldova and ensures the delivery of gas to the Transnistrian region.
“For us, the energy sector is very important and it is a sector in which the Republic of Moldova has made a lot of progress. We are ready to work with the government and support them in this crisis, but I believe that the responsibility for any crises lies with Gazprom. It is a reality that all the possibility of a major crisis is on the left bank of the Nistru, and for me it is normal to have a dialogue with Gazprom to solve this issue. We have supported the Republic of Moldova in the last three winters in the energy sector with 240 million euros of support. I have heard of this figure, I think we are not ready today to discuss when this support happens, more importantly it is to avoid this crisis. It is related to Gazprom's obligations to the Republic of Moldova, regarding gas deliveries”, the ambassador said.
An energy crisis in the Transnistrian region could change the interactions between the two banks of the Nistru and would open the way for reintegration, claims the Ambassador of the European Union to the Republic of Moldova.
“It is a question for the Government first and foremost. This possibility exists, but I do not think that the Transnistrian authorities want this process to take place immediately. And it is an additional argument not to have a crisis, and Transnistria will have a greater dependence on Chisinau, and the interactions between the two banks will be changed”.
Also, Jānis Mažeiks said that he does not want to speculate whether the Russian Federation will intentionally trigger an energy crisis in the Republic of Moldova, but it is clear that Moscow has made attempts to “influence Moldova and that this will continue”.
On Friday, December 6, the so-called security council in Tiraspol unanimously approved the establishment of a state of economic emergency. A decree to this effect was signed by the alleged leader in Tiraspol, Vadim Krasnoselski, today, December 9.
We remind you that, starting with January 1, 2025, the Russian gas transit agreement through Ukraine expires, and the delivery of natural gas to the Transnistrian region remains uncertain. In a first comment by the de facto administration in Tiraspol on the risks associated with the cessation of Russian gas transit, those responsible accused Chisinau of not taking action in the energy field, an accusation rejected by the constitutional authorities.
