International Olympiad medalists awarded at 2024 Olympiad Gala

This year, the Olympiad Gala awarded students who achieved top places in international competitions and Olympiads. The event honoured the performances of 39 students and 42 teachers. The gala, organized by the Ministry of Education, brought together teachers, members of the republican Olympic councils, and leaders from European, Balkan, and international Olympiads.

This year's students' achievements include two gold medals, seven silver medals, 23 bronze medals and several honourable diplomas. The Olympians say they prepare daily to achieve performance.

"I won a silver medal at the Balkan Olympiad and silver at the International Mathematics Olympiad. It is a daily training”, says Marius Cerlat, olympian in mathematics.

“The life of an Olympian is one in which you need important qualities such as perseverance, discipline, dedication and it is not easy. Through hard work you achieve good results”, said Alex Secrieru, olympian.

Darius Graur, Olympian in physics, said that he started “preparations for the international Olympiad in the 9th grade”. During the event, the robotics team of the Republic of Moldova was also awarded, which, for the fourth consecutive edition, returned home with gold from the FIRST Global Robotics Challenge Olympiad.

“We did not have much time for this competition, but in this limited time we managed to achieve remarkable results. Only we returned with two gold medals from that competition”, said Mihai Marandici, Olympian in robotics.

“If in previous years we came with one gold medal, this year we managed to come with two, one for the winning alliance and one for innovations in engineering”, said Vladimir Corduneanu, Olympian in robotics.

Mentors say that work and perseverance is the secret of success.

“I was there this year just to inspire them, to give them some ideas, to question their ideas a little. I was there more to confuse them than to help them. But in the end, I helped them by the fact that they improved their mechanisms”, said the mentor of the robotics team, Florin Cazac.

The results of students at international Olympiads in mathematics, physics, chemistry and other disciplines are not just trophies or medals, but indisputable proof that excellence can be achieved even in the most difficult circumstances, says the Minister of Education and Research, Dan Perciun: “You have demonstrated that passion for knowledge and discipline can transcend any obstacle. You are more than Olympians; you are role models for your colleagues, for your communities and society as a whole. In a world where the temptation of easy things is omnipresent, you are living proof that excellence is not only possible, but also necessary.”

This year, students from the Republic of Moldova participated in 16 European, Balkan and international Olympiads and competitions.
