Alarming surge in malaria cases in Ethiopia
Malaria has reached epidemic proportions in Ethiopia, where more than 300,000 cases are being recorded every week. According to the WHO, since the beginning of the year, 8.4 million infections have been recorded in the country, the highest number of cases ever reported in a single year.
Most of the diseases are recorded in areas located below two thousand meters altitude, where almost 70 percent of the population is concentrated.
The number of malaria cases increases between September and December, after the first rainy season, and in April and May, after the second rainy season, when the mosquitoes that transmit the infection through bites are favored to multiply.
The organization Doctors Without Borders warned that an urgent and targeted response is required to bring the malaria epidemic under control.
