Electricity consumption increased this week

Electricity consumption rose sharply this week, surpassing forecasted plans for two consecutive days, according to the Government Crisis Cell. The cool weather and the return of citizens to regular work are the main reasons for this increase.

According to information published by the Executive, on January 15, maximum electricity consumption exceeded the threshold of 1,000 MW, reaching 1,012 MW during peak hours—approximately 20 MW above the forecasted level.

While this situation does not pose immediate risks to tariffs or electricity supply, authorities are urging the public to conserve energy, especially during peak hours. Currently, the Republic of Moldova imports most of its energy from Romania through bilateral contracts and the OPCOM market. Other sources include Termoelectrica Chișinău, CET-Nord, the Costești Hydroelectric Power Plant, and renewable energy.

Due to unfavourable weather conditions, the share of green energy fell below 6% this week; however, forecasts for the weekend indicate a significant increase in renewable energy production, according to the source.

Additionally, authorities announced that Energocom has signed a new electricity supply contract that ensures 100 MW during peak hours (from 7:00 AM to 11:00 PM). The Crisis Cell states that this agreement will help alleviate pressure on tariffs and contribute to the security of electricity supplies.
