CEC proposes implementation of postal voting in 2025 parliamentary elections

The Central Electoral Commission (CEC) is proposing the partial implementation of postal voting in the parliamentary elections scheduled for 2025. This proposal includes the possibility of expanding the number of countries where this voting method can be applied. The recommendation is part of a report approved on January 17, which evaluates the effectiveness of postal voting used during the presidential elections and the constitutional referendum held in the fall of the previous year.

The Electoral Authority believes it is important to maintain the alternative voting method for citizens living abroad to enhance their participation in elections.

“The Central Electoral Commission (CEC) reiterates the recommendation from the Venice Commission to establish postal voting as a permanent method after the 2025 parliamentary elections. This will help ensure stability and legal security,” the cited source reports.

It is worth mentioning that the Republic of Moldova implemented postal voting for the presidential elections and the constitutional referendum in 2024 for citizens eligible to vote located in six countries: the United States of America, Canada, Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Iceland. A total of 1,986 voters requested postal voting; however, after verification, 1,809 requests were accepted, and ballots were sent out. In the first round of voting, 1,312 outer envelopes with ballots were mailed (representing 72.52%), and in the second round, 1,459 envelopes were sent (equating to 80.65%).
