MEP: "Now there is a real union of Romania with the Republic of Moldova, under the EU umbrella"

The Republic of Moldova is in an active and rapid process of European integration with prospects of achieving a favorable result at the end of the current commission, along with Montenegro and North Macedonia, after the cluster negotiations and the completion of the legislative screening stage, says the MEP of the Renew group, Dan Barna. In an interview for Teleradio-Moldova in Brussels, the MEP stated that our country "is much more advanced in terms of the stage of preparations than Ukraine", emphasizing the real opportunity of a "union of Romania with the Republic of Moldova, under the EU umbrella" in 2030.

The opportunity of the 1990s was missed, but in the context we are in now, it is a real union of Romania with the Republic of Moldova, under the EU umbrella. It would be a single country without borders, with an integrated market in which the cultural component makes the difference.

According to the Romanian MEP, Romania supports our European path, including at the level of European institutions and expertise. Despite the external political difficulties, the Government in Chisinau responded actively and correctly to the openness offered by the EU, and this considerably boosted the accession process, adding that the European Union is ready to support the country in becoming a full member by 2030. Thus, the EU has allocated 1.9 billion euros for the Republic of Moldova to reach the minimum of European functionality.

These resources will help the Government of the Republic of Moldova to meet the necessary requirements and to adopt essential reforms such as infrastructure, public administration, justice, tax reform, combating corruption and the healthcare sector. The pre-financing granted to Moldova for integration projects has been significantly increased, from 7% to 18%.

In addition, the MEP stressed the importance of internal reforms and close collaboration with the European Union, so that the Republic of Moldova can achieve its integration objectives and benefit from all the economic, political and security advantages of membership in the European Union.

The Republic of Moldova is much more advanced in terms of the stage of preparations than Ukraine. The government in Chisinau responded promptly to the opening of the European Union, using this opportunity very successfully. The market and interconnections with the European Union are much easier than in the case of Ukraine. (...) The stages were completed much faster, the Republic of Moldova was invited, started the accession procedure and received this significant funding to make rapid progress. It received support from all levels of the EU – from both the European Commission and the Council – and the amendments in the European Parliament that were pro-Moldova were accepted in the trialogue - something that doesn't happen very often.
