Preventing Salmonella: Key hygiene tips for the hot season

During the summer, high temperatures can cause bacteria to multiply rapidly in food, elevating the risk of foodborne infections, such as Salmonella. Specialists advise that it is essential to adhere to food hygiene rules, particularly during this time.
Salmonella is an infection caused by a type of bacteria that can contaminate various products, including eggs, meat, milk, as well as fruits and vegetables, explains gastroenterologist Margarita Surlari.
“It affects the gastrointestinal tract and manifests through symptoms such as diarrhea, fever, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal cramps,” Surlari stated in an interview with Radio Moldova. She emphasized that symptoms can be more severe in children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems.
To prevent infection, the doctor recommends thoroughly washing food before consuming or preparing it. Eggs, fruits, and vegetables should all be cleaned before use. Additionally, meat products should be cooked properly to eliminate the risk of contamination.
