Moldova schools get £28k tech grant for digitalisation

More than 120 schools across the Republic of Moldova are set to acquire new equipment and furniture, and open digital reading rooms and multimedia labs, as part of the Ministry of Education and Research's School Grant Programme.

The institutions were selected after a national competition.

The winning schools each received grants of around $36,000. The funds will be invested in projects that are largely focused on digitalisation.

"Seven classrooms will be equipped with a modern display. We have been considering a journalism centre, and we have a teacher ready to help us, so we have requested seven tablets and a media centre," said Olga Oglindă, principal of the "Emil Necula" High School in Mereni, Anenii Noi district.

"We are happy we won this grant. We will use it to develop and open a digital reading lab. We created this project to motivate middle school students to read, specifically the 570 middle schoolers who will be participating," mentioned Emilia Slavenschi, principal of the "Iulia Hașdeu" High School in the capital.

"This project involves equipping a classroom with all modern equipment, from furniture to tech, including an interactive display. I participated in a month-long training on how to write a project, and then I submitted it," affirmed Vasile Baș, principal of the "Constantin Stere" High School in Soroca.

The project selection was preceded by an intense training period, during which school teams benefited from instruction in project management, budget development, and defining strategic objectives.

"This is not a financial investment; it's an investment in the future of every child," pointed out Valentina Olaru, State Secretary of the Ministry of Education and Research. "More than half of the selected projects are dedicated to digitalisation, multimedia labs, and interactive platforms. Through these grants, schools in Moldova are not only becoming more modern but also more connected to international networks."

The projects are due for completion by December 2027.

The programme is part of the "Improving Quality in Education" Project, with funds provided through the Global Partnership for Education and administered by the World Bank.
