US believes Russia is pursuing the possibility of a more Russian-friendly administration in Chisinau

The United States sees no immediate threat to Moldova, White House national security spokesman John Kirby said today, as quoted by Reuters. According to the official, the US administration believes Russia is seeking to weaken our country and install a government more favourable to Moscow.

"We believe that Russia is seeking to weaken the government of the Republic of Moldova, certainly with the ultimate goal of seeing a more favourable administration at the helm of this country," Kirby said.

Kirby also said the United States had indications that actors connected to the Russian government could be training anti-government protesters in Moldova.

Shortly after these statements, U.S. Ambassador to Chisinau Kent D. Logsdon noted that "this information is troubling, though not necessarily surprising to many Moldovan citizens."

"The United States remains confident in the ability of this Government to deliver on its promises and effectively address these threats. The people of Moldova, Moldovan business people, and international investors must also maintain their confidence that the Government of Moldova is well positioned to implement the meaningful reforms necessary for the country's economic development and to defend itself against external forces that do not want Moldova to succeed," Logsdon said.

The United States has repeatedly expressed its support for Moldova's political, economic and anti-corruption reforms as well as its deepening European integration.

President Maia Sandu attended the public event in Warsaw at the invitation of US President Joe Biden at the end of February. The White House leader also addressed Maia Sandu during his speech in Warsaw, asking the audience to applaud her.

Afterwards, the two heads of state met to discuss the consequences of the war in Ukraine for Moldova.
