New freelancer regime adopted by nearly 250 people: Lower taxes effective from January 1

A total of 241 freelancers have officially registered their independent activities to benefit from the provisions of the law that will enter into force on January 1, 2026, which introduces a simplified taxation regime.

"According to the Ministry of Economic Development and Digitalization, 241 Moldovans have chosen to work legally and simply, benefiting from low taxes under the new freelancer regime. This trend demonstrates that an increasing number of individuals are embracing the opportunity to transform their work into a path of independence and stability.

Registration for online self-employment is free and can be completed through the Public Services Portal, the Public Services Agency, or the EVO application."

The simplified taxation regime for individuals engaged in independent economic activities covers 40 different types of activities.

This system is particularly beneficial for individuals providing services, such as wedding photographers and other event professionals, as well as those offering cleaning services without a formal employment contract.

Additionally, it applies to individuals earning income from crafts without having a registered business or those delivering services in areas such as education, physical activity, or pet care.

Freelancers under this regime pay a flat 15% tax on their earnings, capped at 1.2 million lei. For income exceeding this threshold, the tax rate increases to 35%.

This flat tax encompasses all main tax obligations, including income tax, state social insurance contributions, and mandatory health insurance premiums.
