France’s National Assembly unanimously approves driving license recognition for Moldovans

The French National Assembly has officially adopted a bilateral agreement to recognize driving licenses issued by the Republic of Moldova. This decision marks a significant milestone in simplifying administrative procedures for Moldovan citizens living in France.

Once the agreement is promulgated by French President Emmanuel Macron, Moldovan drivers will be able to exchange their permits for French ones without undergoing additional theoretical or practical examinations. This measure is expected to drastically reduce the time and financial burdens previously associated with obtaining French driving credentials.

Igor Grosu, the President of the Moldovan Parliament, commended the French legislature's decision. "I thank everyone involved for this result and the French parliamentarians for their supportive vote," Grosu stated.

A growing network of recognition

The agreement passed with a unanimous vote, signaling a strong consensus among French lawmakers regarding closer cooperation with Chisinau. Moldovan authorities emphasize that this move is a concrete step in strengthening bilateral ties between the two nations.

This development follows a series of similar diplomatic successes in 2025. In July, Chisinau announced that Moldovan licenses would also be recognized in Italy and the United Kingdom. Currently, Moldova maintains similar agreements with Latvia, Spain, Greece, Israel, Turkey, Albania, and Lithuania.

Furthermore, a joint declaration of intent exists between Moldova and Germany, while formal negotiations for a similar bilateral agreement with Ireland were initiated in the summer of 2025.
