On April 1, Russia takes over the presidency of the UN Security Council. KIev reacts
The head of Russian diplomacy, Serghei Lavrov, will chair a meeting of the UN Security Council in New York in April, the month in which Russia will hold the rotating presidency of the executive body of the UN, reports Agerpres.
"Another key event of the Russian presidency will be the Security Council's high-level public debate on effective multilateralism by defending the principles of the UN Charter. This meeting will be chaired by the Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sergey Lavrov", his spokeswoman, Maria Zakharova, told the media.
She said Lavrov also plans to chair a debate session on the Middle East on April 25.
Earlier on Thursday, Ukraine called the upcoming presidency of the UN Security Council a "bad joke".
"Russia usurped its place. It is waging a colonial war. Its president is a war criminal wanted by the ICC for child abduction," Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitro Kuleba said.
Russia is set to take over the leadership of the executive body of the United Nations starting Saturday for the entire month of April.
Lavrov's last visit to the United Nations in New York dates back to last September, during the General Assembly.
