Moldovan courts sentence fraudsters in logistics and high-stakes romance scams

The Chisinau Municipality Prosecutor's Office has secured convictions against two men involved in distinct fraud schemes. The cases involve logistics theft and a complex "romance scam" that led to the financial ruin of a foreign national.
A 21-year-old man was sentenced to four years in prison for executing five separate fraud episodes between October 2023 and September 2024. The defendant posed as a courier for "Yandex Taxi," using fictitious digital identities to intercept and misappropriate high-value packages.
The stolen goods, including cash, smartphones, and luxury apparel, resulted in damages totaling approximately 50,000 MDL (€2,551). The court noted the defendant's use of sophisticated anonymity tools, though he partially admitted guilt during the proceedings.
The Tinder "Pig Butchering" scheme
In a separate ruling, a 42-year-old man received a three-year suspended sentence after defrauding a Ukrainian woman of over $30,000. Operating between April and December 2025, the convict posed as a high-net-worth businessman from Bucharest on Tinder.
After establishing a psychological bond, he manipulated the victim into funding non-existent investments and US visa applications. Desperate to support the "relationship," the victim liquidated her apartment in Ukraine and transferred the proceeds via cryptocurrency platforms.
Financial restitution and sanctions
The court has ordered the 42-year-old to repay $30,457 (approx. 597,000 MDL) in material damages and 100,000 MDL (€5,102) in moral compensation. Additionally, he is prohibited from managing any financial assets for the next three years.
While the defendant expressed regret and promised restitution, the prosecution highlighted that the funds had already been diverted into speculative trading platforms before his arrest.
