Moldova seeks €70 million to complete nationwide Model Schools Network

Moldova’s Ministry of Education and Research (MEC) is actively seeking approximately €70 million (approx. 1.37 billion MDL) in external funding to finalize its ambitious "Model Schools" initiative.

This strategic program aims to modernize 90 educational institutions across the country. To date, authorities have secured €150 million of the estimated €220 million total project cost through international partners.

Securing international investment

Viorica Negrei, head of General Education Management at MEC, confirmed that while design work has begun for all 90 schools, 35 priority institutions are already undergoing active renovations and staff training.

The project emphasizes pedagogical quality alongside infrastructure. Teachers are receiving specialized training from international experts, focusing on practical, applied learning and STEM disciplines to meet European standards.

Cimișlia as a flagship pilot

The "Mihai Eminescu" Theoretical High School in Cimișlia will be the first to undergo a total overhaul. This specific project is supported by a €50 million (EUR) grant from the Norwegian government.

According to school director Ecaterina Cojocaru, the renovations include remodeling classrooms with modern furniture, state-of-the-art interactive boards, and specialized Physics and Chemistry laboratories.

A multi-partner strategic vision

Education Minister Dan Perciun announced that the public procurement process for the Cimișlia works will conclude on April 9. This follows the broader roadmap set by the Model Schools Network, launched in 2023.

The initiative is bolstered by a coalition of international partners, including the World Bank, the European Union, the Government of Poland, UNDP, and UNICEF, alongside private sector contributors.
