Returned migrants build sustainable cherry agribusiness in Moldova

Moldovan migrant returnees Viorica and Mihail Ostafeiciuc have successfully transitioned their overseas earnings into a modern commercial orchard. Located near the village of Cojusna, the agricultural enterprise has expanded from a single hectare in 2017 to a robust 10-hectare plantation.

The multi-variety cherry farm focuses on early, mid-season, and late-maturing crops. This structural strategy allows the family to optimize seasonal logistics and manage domestic labor shortages effectively.

Institutional grants and green technology

Financial modernization represents a core pillar of agribusiness development. The enterprise secured approximately €30,770 (600,000 MDL) from Moldova’s Agency for Interventions and Payments in Agriculture to fund infrastructure and equipment.

Additionally, a partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Moldova enabled the installation of a comprehensive solar energy system. The photovoltaic installation powers the farm's automated irrigation pumping stations.

The green energy transition drastically reduced operating costs. Monthly electrical overheads fell from around €410–€510 (8,000–10,000 MDL) down to approximately €150–€255 (3,000–5,000 MDL).

Climate resilience and processing goals

The technological investments aim to shield the farm against volatile weather patterns. In recent seasons, unexpected spring frosts and torrential downpours limited yields to 25 tons across five mature hectares, an output below the land's actual economic potential.

To hedge against future climate and market fluctuations, the entrepreneurs plan to build a rural guesthouse. The project will include a micro-processing unit to transform surplus fresh fruit into artisanal jams and juices.
