FAC meeting in Luxembourg // Bogdan Aurescu to speak on getting EU political agreement to sanction those who want to destabilise Moldova
The head of Romanian diplomacy, Bogdan Aurescu, will address the most important developments regarding the European Union's support for the Republic of Moldova at the meeting of EU foreign ministers - the Foreign Affairs Council (FAC), which will take place in Luxembourg, according to a press release from the Romanian Foreign Ministry.
"During the discussions on the Republic of Moldova, the head of the Romanian diplomacy, Bogdan Aurescu, will refer to the most important developments regarding EU support to the Republic of Moldova: Obtaining political agreement on the creation of a sanctions regime to counter destabilising actions against the Republic of Moldova and its constitutional order, a proposal launched by Minister Bogdan Aurescu at the February FAC; the adoption of the decision to create the EU Civilian Partnership Mission in the Republic of Moldova, strongly supported by Romania, a mission that will contribute to increasing the country's resilience and security, and the continuation of EU assistance in the defence sector to the Republic of Moldova through the European Peace Facility," the source added.
According to an MFA press release, European foreign ministers will have in-depth discussions on Russia's aggression against Ukraine, with the participation of Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba via videoconference, and the implementation of the EU Action Plan on the geopolitical consequences of Russia's aggression against Ukraine on third states.
"Regarding Russia's aggression against Ukraine, Minister Bogdan Aurescu will stress the need to continue EU support for Ukraine as long as necessary and will mention topical elements regarding the multidimensional support offered to Ukraine by Romania, as well as in connection with the first Conference on Black Sea Security, co-organised with Ukraine, being held in Bucharest (12-13 April), and the second trilateral meeting Romania - Ukraine - Republic of Moldova, hosted by Minister Bogdan Aurescu", reads the Romanian Foreign Ministry's press release.
On Monday, 24 April, the Foreign Ministers of the EU Member States will meet in Luxembourg at the Foreign Affairs Council. The situation in Moldova will be discussed in the framework of the issue of the geopolitical consequences of Russia's war of aggression.
Moldovan Foreign Minister Nicu Popescu called in February for the EU to sanction oligarchs and corrupt politicians who, under Russian influence, are trying to destabilise the situation in Moldova. The names of those who could be targeted by the new sanctions regime have not yet been made public.
In October 2022, the US sanctioned Ilan Șor for jeopardising the Moldovan elections in Russia's interest and Vladimir Plahotniuc for systemic corruption. Subsequently, in December, the UK also imposed sanctions against Șor and Plahotniuc.
In March, the European Commission was discussing the implementation of a new sanctions regime for individuals who want to destabilise Moldova.
