Ilan Șor's extradition request from Israel could be considered urgently

The Ministry of Justice has sent a request to the Israeli authorities to consider Ilan Șor's extradition request as a matter of urgency so that the fugitive MP can serve his sentence in the Republic of Moldova. The announcement was made by Justice Minister Veronica Mihailov-Moraru during a broadcast on Rlive TV.

"As soon as the decision of the Court of Appeal on the sentence imposed became known to us, we contacted the Israeli authorities, Ilan Șor's status on this case was updated and we requested urgent consideration of the extradition request. We have not received a response to our request for urgency. We are waiting for a reply from the Israeli authorities. At least we have received confirmation that the request has been received. The Israeli authority is already going to take the decision. Colleagues from the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office have researched Israel's experience in other cases and there have been cases where Israel has given permission for a person to serve his sentence on the territory of another state, even though he was an Israeli citizen", Veronica Mihailov Moraru told RliveTV's "Rezoomat with Ileana Pirgaru".

According to the minister, it cannot be excluded that Ilan Șor will serve his sentence in Israel if the extradition request is rejected.

"Given that he is on the territory of Israel and possesses Israeli citizenship, it is up to that state to decide whether or not to grant the extradition request and decide where he serves his sentence. If, hypothetically speaking, the request for extradition to the territory of the Republic of Moldova is rejected, but it is decided that the sentence will be served there, this is not a negligible option", explained Veronica Mihailov-Moraru.

On 14 April this year, fugitive MP Ilan Șor was sentenced to 15 years' imprisonment in a closed prison for bank fraud. The decision was taken by the Chisinau Court of Appeal. Ilan Șor described the court's decision as illegal, taken under pressure and in violation of the law.
