Moldova police investigate series of fatal domestic incidents
Moldovan police opened separate investigations into five sudden deaths recorded across the country on Saturday, including two suspected suicides and a fatal domestic shooting in Criuleni district.
Fatal shooting in the capital
In Chișinău, a 51-year-old man was found dead with a gunshot wound on Aug. 31. His 17-year-old daughter discovered the body and alerted emergency services and the police.
“At the scene, officers established that the man was not listed in the state firearms registry, and the weapon found belongs to an immediate relative,” the police said. Authorities treat the case as a suspected suicide while inquiries into the full circumstances continue.
Double tragedy in southern city of Cahul
In the southern city of Cahul, police entered an apartment after neighbors complained of a foul odor. Officers found the front door locked from the inside and discovered two deceased women: a 64-year-old mother and her 36-year-old daughter, who had a registered disability.
Preliminary forensic checks indicated that the daughter died of asphyxiation, while the mother showed signs of strangulation. A suicide note was recovered from the residence.
“The bodies were transferred to the Center for Forensic Medicine to establish the exact causes of death, and police are continuing their inquiries to clarify all the circumstances of this tragedy,” the General Police Inspectorate said in a statement.
Domestic violence and murder-suicide in Criuleni
In a third fatal incident on Saturday, a married couple aged 47 and 42 was found dead inside their home in Criuleni district. The couple's 15-year-old daughter discovered the scene and alerted police.
Investigators believe the husband shot his wife following a domestic dispute before taking his own life. The man was already known to law enforcement authorities, was subject to an active restraining order, and had been fitted with an electronic monitoring bracelet on Aug. 25.
