"DeepTech GigaHack 2026": Participants from 13 countries in Moldova join the fourth innovation marathon
The fourth edition of "DeepTech GigaHack," an event focused on advanced technologies and innovation, will be held from September 25 to 27. For the first time, the event will take place in a hybrid format, bringing together participants from 13 countries. Notably, 50 individuals have traveled to the Republic of Moldova specifically to compete in this competition.
This year's edition highlights cybersecurity, with participants engaging in simulations that involve cyberattacks on critical infrastructure and strategies for protection. Other key focus areas include healthcare and finance.
The term "deep tech" refers to technologies and products that emerge from research and scientific discoveries. These innovations are transformed into practical solutions that possess a high degree of innovation and intellectual property.
"'Deep tech' is a product that begins with research or a discovery, which is then applied in practice," explained Mery Nemciuc, CEO of Technovator, during the show "Bună Dimineața" on Moldova 1.
Participants will have 48 hours to work in teams to develop prototypes addressing real-world problems.
The organizers clarify that the goal is not to create a finished product in such a short timeframe, but rather to understand the problem, identify a solution path, and outline the steps needed for future product development.
"During these 48 hours, we expect participants to fully understand the problem. The second focus is solving a key aspect of the problem that differentiates it from other market products, and having a plan for the next steps to bring the product to market. While it's impossible to build a finished product in 48 hours, this event serves as a catalyst that sparks innovation," stated expert Mihai Dascăl during the program.
A key feature of "GigaHack" is forming multidisciplinary teams. Participants are encouraged to come from backgrounds beyond the tech sector; they can include individuals from medicine, engineering, finance, and other fields, working alongside technical specialists to turn challenges into viable solutions.
"GigaHack" also aims to support projects beyond the 48-hour event. Finalists will have access to incubation and acceleration programs, including initiatives partnered with Agrotech Park and an accelerator hosted by Impact Hub in Bucharest. Through this support, the organizers hope to see the prototypes evolve into market-ready products.
Previous editions of DeepTech GigaHack have already given rise to projects that continue to evolve, notably MediDive—an AI-powered tool for medical professionals—and the startup FindGuide.
Mery Nemciuc emphasized, "If what I’ve shared resonates with you and you are eager to get involved—whether you grasp every detail or just find the concept fascinating—we encourage you to follow the event and participate. Teams can be formed in different ways: participants can attend as pre-established groups or meet and form teams on the spot. Curiosity is the most important factor; it lies at the very heart of this initiative."
The event is designed to serve as a connection platform linking research, the business sector, and universities, bringing together participants from the Republic of Moldova and beyond. The organizers aim to foster collaboration to increase the number of innovative products developed in the Republic of Moldova and to facilitate their entry into international markets.
Participation is available online and in person, with a limited number of spots.
Winners will receive cash prizes ranging from 30,000 to 90,000 lei.
