The President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, received the "European Romania Award" in Cluj Napoca
The President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, received the "European Romania Award" in Cluj Napoca, during the conference "Europe after the war in Ukraine. Perspectives, visions, strategies, projects'', organised by the Initiative Association for European Democratic Culture. In her acceptance speech, she said authoritarian regimes hope the war will weaken the democratic world. This will pay an even higher price if Vladimir Putin is not stopped now, Maia Sandu also said in the conference in Cluj-Napoca.
"Russia's war in Ukraine is a threat to the entire democratic world. Authoritarian regimes, even if they do not openly support Russia, hope that the democratic world will be weakened in this war, that it will be divided, that it will lose its popular support. That's why, at the global level, Ukraine's victory is important, not only for the restoration of international law but also for the consolidation of democracies", said President Maia Sandu, quoted by RFI Romania.
The leader from Chisinau appealed for the unconditional support of Ukraine, regardless of the costs or the duration of the war.
"Even though we are all happy about the progress that the Ukrainian army is making, I think we have to be prepared for a sadder scenario, a scenario where this war will last. Because there will be a great need for support for Ukraine, because there will be a need for support for the Republic of Moldova in the future, because we know that the Kremlin's goal is to exhaust the support of Europe and Ukraine's other partners, and we must not allow this," mentioned Maia Sandu.
The President specified that for the Republic of Moldova, "Ukraine's victory means the restoration of peace, the removal of Russian troops from our country, normal economic development and the chance to remain part of the free world, the chance to advance on the path of European integration."
"Our major goal is to keep peace in the Republic of Moldova and to remain part of the free world," emphasised President Maia Sandu.
