According to the document, the aim is to protect the national audiovisual space and ensure information security, taking into account the current regional and national security threat caused by the Russian Federation's aggression against Ukraine.

"In the period from 2000 to 2022, the state budget paid 40.3 million lei from the state budget to the Moldovan representative office of MIR. Denunciation of our country's participation in the activity of "MIR" company will contribute to saving financial resources and, perhaps more importantly, will reaffirm the commitment of the Republic of Moldova to protect the national and regional information space," said the Secretary General of the Government Artur Mija.

During the debate on the issue, Bloc of Communists and Socialists MP Adela Raileanu criticised the decision.

"The live broadcasts on MIR TV of Independence Day, the "Martisor" and "Invite Maria Biesu" festivals have damaged the image of our country?"

"MIR" is a media structure of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) and the founder of the TV stations "Mir TV" and "Mir 24", which does not hold a broadcasting licence issued by the Audiovisual Council and is not a media service provider under the jurisdiction of the Republic of Moldova.

Moreover, the retransmission of these TV channels is currently suspended during the state of emergency, following the issuance of a provision to this effect by the Commission for Exceptional Situations. According to the document, during the period of emergency, the broadcasting or retransmission in the Republic of Moldova of programmes produced in states that have not ratified the European Convention on Transfrontier Television is prohibited, with certain exceptions.
