Moldova: How to choose an electric heater

As temperatures fall across Moldova, consumers are turning to electric heaters for extra warmth. Retailers recommend comparing room size, rated power and purchase costs before choosing a model.
Convector heaters, oil-filled radiators and fan heaters
Convector heaters, oil-filled radiators and fan heaters are among the main options available to households, according to Dan Nevranschi, an appliance store consultant in Chisinau.
“People most often prefer convector heaters because they heat up faster and are considered more economical,” Nevranschi said in an interview with Radio Moldova.
Oil-filled radiators take longer to heat up but retain warmth for longer after being switched off. The consultant said standard convector heaters typically have a rated power of 1.5–1.9 kW.
However, the most suitable option depends on the room, the desired temperature and how the appliance is used. Electric resistance heaters convert electricity into heat, so a higher rated power does not automatically mean greater energy efficiency.
Room size and power settings matter
Consumers should consider how frequently they intend to use a heater and how large the room is, Nevranschi said. Larger spaces generally require more heating capacity, while adjustable power settings can help users regulate output according to their needs.
“Most models have two or three power levels, allowing people to choose the setting that suits their needs,” he said.
The consultant also recommended considering supplementary electric heating as an alternative to using a home's autonomous heating system. Actual running costs will depend on electricity tariffs, operating hours, insulation and the temperature setting.
Prices range from €15 to €148
Prices vary according to the model and its rated power. In Chisinau, basic fan heaters start at about €15 (approx. 300 MDL), while higher-capacity convectors and electric radiators can cost up to €148 (approx. 3,000 MDL).
Nevranschi said autumn and early winter were suitable times to shop for heating appliances, with a range of models available at different prices.
Consumers should also check the manufacturer's safety instructions, avoid overloading electrical sockets and keep portable heaters away from curtains, bedding and other combustible materials.
