The gas market in the Republic of Moldova has been liberalised

Consumers in the Republic of Moldova will be able to choose their gas supplier. Parliament voted in final reading on a draft law aimed at ensuring the unbundling and certification of gas transmission operators.

According to the document, once the process of unbundling the transmission system is completed, there will be several gas suppliers on the market. This will allow operators to conclude contracts for the lease of transmission and distribution networks on fair terms. The draft law is a commitment of the Republic of Moldova under the European Union's third energy package, which states that the energy market should be liberalised and production, transmission and supply activities separated.

Thus, no company in the energy industry has the right to vertically integrate, lest unfair competition arise. This means that Moldovagaz must give up the transmission operator Moldovatransgaz.

Recently, the company Vestmoldtransgaz was provisionally designated by ANRE as the operator of the natural gas transmission system. By this decision, mechanisms were provided for ensuring a possible takeover of the transmission networks from Moldovatransgaz, if the company does not complete the separation process from Moldovagaz by September.

Today, the head of the company Vadim Ceban wrote on social media that Moldovatransgaz has started the separation process according to the independent operator model.
