Lukashenko says he warned Prigozhin of assassination attempt

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said Friday he warned Yevgeny Prigozhin, the head of the Wagner mercenary group who died after the plane he was on crashed on Wednesday, in the past to be alert to possible deadly dangers, reported by Reuters, quoted by Agerpres.

Lukashenko said he learned of preparations for an attack on Prigozhin and passed the information to the Kremlin, and the Russian president in turn warned the businessman.

"I know Putin: he is calculated, very calm, even slow. I can't imagine that Putin did this, that Putin is to blame. It's simply too rudimentary and unprofessional," Lukashenko said.

The Kremlin also dismissed suggestions in the West that Prigozhin was killed on Putin's orders, calling them "an absolute lie." Although Putin sent condolences to Prigozhin's family, the Russian presidency did not officially confirm his death, but said it was awaiting the results of tests.

Prigozhin was a close ally of Putin and had been accused of being involved in a number of controversial activities, including the use of mercenaries to support Russian military operations in Syria and Libya.

The plane crash that killed Prigozhin is still under investigation.
