Government honours organisers of Bessarabian Gulag exhibition

The Government of the Republic of Moldova has awarded the diploma of honour and letters of thanks to the people who contributed to the successful organisation of the immersive exhibition "Bessarabians in the Gulag." The exhibition, which was held in the Great National Assembly Square from July 9 to 30, honoured the memory of the victims of Stalinist deportations.

Prime Minister Dorin Recean expressed his gratitude to all those involved in the realisation of the idea, saying that the exhibition had a tremendous impact on society. "A lot of people who did not know or had forgotten about the horrors of the past have had their memories refreshed and the deportees or their families have had the opportunity to tell their life stories," Recean said.

The exhibition was organised by the Government of the Republic of Moldova, the State Chancellery and the Ministry of Culture, with the support of the National Archives Agency, the National History Museum and the National Library. It featured two wagons, similar to those in which tens of thousands of Bessarabians were deported to Siberia, as well as objects that belonged to the deportees, a collection of thematic books and archival materials.

The unique format of the exhibition was made possible thanks to the support of the State Enterprise "Moldovan Railways," which provided the two wagons. The wagons were installed in the Great National Assembly Square with the support of the National Motor Transport Agency and the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

The exhibition was a success, with over 10,000 people visiting it during its two-week run. It was praised by historians and survivors of the deportations, who said that it was an important way to remember and learn from the past.

The government's decision to honor the organizers of the exhibition is a further sign of its commitment to preserving the memory of the victims of Stalinist deportations. It is also a reminder of the importance of educating future generations about this dark chapter in Moldova's history.
