New legislation proposed to punish drunk drivers more severely

Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu is calling for tougher penalties for traffic violations in the wake of multiple recent accidents. He urged the Committee on National Security, Defense and Public Order to hold discussions on the matter with all the institutions responsible in the field.

"Let's think about more severe sanctions," Grosu said. "If a driver can't restrain himself, can't control himself, and doesn't understand how serious it is to get behind the wheel drunk, let him be without a driver's licence for life. It will be better for him and for the people around him."

Grosu also called on the Committee on Legal Affairs, Appointments and Immunities to revise the legislation to introduce tougher provisions for drivers who cause accidents while drunk or without a driving licence.

The speaker's proposal comes after a recent accident in which a drunk driver killed four people. The driver, who was also without a driving licence, was arrested and charged with manslaughter.

The General Inspectorate of Police has recently approved an instruction on special confiscation of vehicles in the context of the traffic offence process. The measure will be applicable to persons who drive the vehicle while intoxicated exceeding the maximum degree established by law, who knowingly hand over the driving of the vehicle to a person who is deprived of the right to drive, as well as those who drive the vehicle while deprived of the right to drive.
