Former Moldovan President Mircea Snegur dies at 83
Mircea Snegur, the first president of Moldova, died in the early hours of Thursday, September 14, according to the Ziarul de Gardă newspaper. He was 83.
Snegur was elected president in 1990 and served two terms. He was a key figure in the country's transition to independence from the Soviet Union. He also played a leading role in the adoption of the Romanian language as the official language of Moldova and the restoration of the country's tricolour flag.
Snegur was born on January 17, 1940, in the village of Trifănești, Soroca district. He graduated from the Frumușica Secondary School in Florești district in 1956 and the Chisinau Agricultural Institute in 1961. He received his doctorate in agricultural sciences from the same institute in 1972.
Snegur's death is a major loss for Moldova. He was a respected figure who played a significant role in shaping the country's history.
