The ECtHR decided compensation of 3,600 euros for Alexandr Stoianoglo

The European Court of Human Rights decided, in a unanimous decision, that the Republic of Moldova violated former Prosecutor General Alexandr Sroianoglo's right of access to the court. At the same time, the ECtHR found that the applicant was not granted any form of judicial protection in connection with his suspension. As a result, he could not fulfill his service obligations and was deprived of his salary for more than 2 years.

Thus, the Republic of Moldova must pay damages to Alexandr Stoinaoglo in the amount of 3,600 Euros as costs and expenses. We remind you that on September 26, the head of state Maia Sandu signed the decree releasing Alexandr Stoianoglo from the position of prosecutor general, based on the decision of a decision of the Superior Council of Prosecutors dated May 23, 2022. The lawyer of the ex-prosecutor general, Vasile Gafton, told Radio Moldova that the decree will be contested in court.

We remind you that in 2021, Alexandr Stoianoglo was detained being investigated for passive corruption, false statements, abuse of office and abuse of power. He was later indicted for illicit enrichment. Alexandr Stoianoglo has not pleaded guilty, and his lawyers have filed several complaints with the ECHR.

He was appointed general prosecutor in the fall of 2019 for a 7-year term.
