Moldova secures climate resilience boost from IMF
In a significant step towards enhancing its climate resilience and economic stability, Moldova has secured a new financing package from the International Monetary Fund's (IMF) Resilience and Sustainability Facility (RFS). The agreement was reached following discussions between President Maia Sandu, Mark Horton, Deputy Director of the IMF's European Department, and Paul Hilbers, Executive Director of the IMF, during their visit to Chisinau.
The RFS will provide crucial support to the Moldovan government's efforts in tackling climate challenges, including bolstering resilience against climate shocks and strengthening energy security. The finalised negotiations pave the way for a positive decision from the IMF's Executive Board, expected in early December 2023.
Beyond climate resilience, the IMF delegation and Moldovan officials also delved into the country's current economic situation and recent developments in the region. The discussions encompassed the IMF's role in supporting Moldova's economic recovery, fostering a stable and predictable economic environment, and facilitating the nation's integration into the European Union.
President Sandu expressed her gratitude to the IMF representatives for their unwavering partnership and ongoing support in maintaining Moldova's economic stability.
