Moldova's Disinformation Center: A shield for democracy
In a move to counter the growing threat of misinformation and propaganda, Moldova is set to establish a Strategic Communication and Disinformation Center, a government agency tasked with safeguarding the nation's information landscape.
Headed by Ana Revenco, the center will employ 35 individuals and receive a budget of 20 million lei ($1.1 million) from the 2024 state budget.
The center's overarching mission will focus on strengthening the capacity of both government institutions and society as a whole to effectively communicate and combat disinformation. This will be achieved through a range of strategies, including continuous monitoring and analysis of the information space, fact-checking initiatives, and targeted public awareness campaigns.
"Strategic communication and disinformation are becoming essential elements for maintaining a well-informed society, protecting national security, and ensuring the integrity of democratic processes," emphasized Revenco. "By establishing this center, we are aligning ourselves with the standards and best practices of countries that value democracy, security, and the prosperity of their citizens."
The center's establishment underscores Moldova's commitment to upholding democratic values and safeguarding its national security, particularly in the face of heightened regional tensions arising from the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
