Muresan: EU door opens for Moldova, reforms key to progress
In a milestone decision, the European Council has initiated on Thursday accession negotiations with Moldova, propelling the country closer to its long-cherished dream of EU membership.
This development marks a significant acceleration in Moldova's European integration journey, following its official candidate status granted in June 2022.
"This pivotal moment signifies a new chapter for Moldova," affirmed Romanian MEP Siegfried Muresan. "It solidifies Moldova’s unwavering commitment to European values and paves the way for deeper integration within the bloc."
While the precise time frame for accession remains undetermined, Muresan underscored the critical role of sustained domestic reforms. "The duration of negotiations will be directly contingent upon the pace and efficacy of reform implementation," he stated. "Preserving a pro-European government and fostering transparency in political processes will be crucial for expediting progress."
President Maia Sandu, a vocal proponent of EU membership, has set 2030 as a potential target date for accession. Muresan believes this ambitious goal serves as a valuable compass, providing clear direction and motivation throughout the intricate negotiation process.
The European Council's decision to commence accession talks signifies a robust endorsement of Moldova's European aspirations. It recognizes the country's commendable efforts in bolstering its democratic institutions, strengthening the rule of law, and advancing economic stability.
