Ukrainian spirit meets German solidarity in ongoing conflict
German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock reiterated her nation's unwavering support for Ukraine, condemning Russian President Vladimir Putin's alleged pursuit of the country's "destruction" through the ongoing invasion, as reported by Agerpres.
In a Samstag interview with Potsdamer Neusten Nachrichten, Baerbock acknowledged the thwarted ambition of Putin's initial plan to capture Kyiv and subjugate over 40 million Ukrainians. She attributed this to "the unwavering courage of the Ukrainians," alongside international backing that "stands by the victim in this conflict, instead of turning a blind eye to aggression."
Baerbock highlighted the dire situation in Russian-occupied territories, painting a grim picture of what could have become of the entire country and neighbouring states without international solidarity. She further emphasised Putin's suspected strategy of targeting vital infrastructure, stating, "He seeks Ukraine's annihilation, and that is why we will stand with them for as long as necessary."
Since Russia's February 2022 invasion, the conflict has witnessed swift advances towards Kyiv followed by a significant shift in focus to eastern Ukraine. Despite Russia's illegal annexation of four Ukrainian territories, their offensive has largely stalled, prompting the launch of a Ukrainian counteroffensive earlier this year.
Germany remains a pivotal supporter of Ukraine, ranking second only to the United States in terms of military aid, including critical equipment like tanks, artillery, and air defence systems.
