Romania's resilience: Iohannis highlights progress despite challenges in 2023
In his annual New Year's address, President Klaus Iohannis acknowledged the "profound challenges and profound uncertainties" faced by Romania in 2023.
The shadow of the ongoing war in Ukraine loomed large, prompting anxieties and demanding unwavering national unity. However, Iohannis struck a hopeful and forward-looking tone, highlighting Romania's continued stability, progress, and immense potential for the future.
Navigating Uncertainties with Resolve
"Dear Romanians, as we approach the beginning of a new year, we reflect on what 2023 meant for each of us, but also for our collective journey," began the President. "We have together faced times of profound trial and profound uncertainty."
Recognizing the anxieties surrounding the war, Iohannis offered reassurance, emphasising Romania's secure status within the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). "With a war still ongoing at our borders, Romania has remained a safe country," he asserted. "We are NATO members, we have the greatest security guarantees in history, and thus each of us is protected from any possible threat."
Stability and Progress Fueling Optimism
Beyond safety, Iohannis commended the government's unwavering commitment to progress amidst challenging circumstances. "We have managed to maintain a stable government that has continued to modernise major public systems, from education to health to infrastructure and administration," he declared.
This dedication to advancement, evident in vital sectors like education and healthcare, served as a testament to Romania's resilience and adaptability. It also fueled optimism for the future, paving the way for further development and prosperity.
Economic Strength and Green Ambitions
Romania's economic performance also received praise from the President. Iohannis lauded the country's "robust" economy, highlighting its ability to weather global economic storms. Additionally, he commended the strides taken towards energy independence, showcasing a commitment to both economic self-sufficiency and environmental sustainability.
"We have also consolidated our energy independence, including through the use of green technologies that protect the environment," stated Iohannis. This emphasis on green energy solutions aligned with global sustainability initiatives and positioned Romania as a responsible player on the international stage.
A Call to Action for a Brighter Future
As Romania prepares for the pivotal 2024 elections, Iohannis urged citizens to actively participate in shaping the country's future. "The end of the year is also a good opportunity to look to the future with optimism and confidence," he conveyed. "We have enormous potential for development, and the 2024 electoral year will put us in front of choices that will mark the destiny of our country."
Emphasising the importance of civic engagement, Iohannis concluded his address with a powerful call to action: "Therefore, in order to succeed in transforming Romania into the country we want it to be, it is vital that we exercise our right to vote in all the upcoming rounds of elections. So let us welcome 2024 with hope and the conviction that together we can overcome any obstacle. In this spirit of unity and solidarity, I wish you all a Happy New Year, full of health, joy and fulfilment! Happy New Year!"
