Emerging Europe's recent analysis paints a stark picture: the upcoming presidential elections and EU integration referendum will serve as a crucial litmus test for the country's pro-European aspirations.

Marek Grzegorczyk, the analysis's author, views Moldova's recent journey as a beacon of progress within emerging Europe. He asserts: "The European Council's decision to open accession talks confirms that Moldova's sustained economic reforms and strong performance are bearing fruit. The westward direction, truly solidified with Maia Sandu's 2020 presidential victory, is now irreversible."

However, 2024 presents a formidable obstacle course. November's presidential elections, followed by parliamentary polls in early 2025, will determine the country's future path. Grzegorczyk highlights the strategic brilliance of Sandu's EU referendum, designed to bolster her support. Yet, he warns, "Russia is almost certain to make concerted attempts to disrupt the electoral process."

Recent local elections offer a glimmer of hope. The pro-European camp's resounding victory across the nation serves as a testament to its growing momentum. Grzegorczyk concludes with a fervent wish: "For the sake of Moldova and its economy, let us hope that the presidential vote and referendum echo the resounding affirmation of the local polls."
