Grandi met with President Maia Sandu and other government officials to discuss the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine and Moldova's response. He also visited refugee centres and spoke with refugees about their experiences.

"This is a tragedy that continues for millions of people," Grandi said. "We are very grateful for the exceptional cooperation we have enjoyed with your government."

Sandu thanked Grandi for his visit and reiterated Moldova's commitment to providing assistance to refugees.

"In this small country, one of the smallest and poorest in Europe, there is no hostile attitude towards Ukrainian refugees," Grandi said. "There are 120,000 refugees, they are still welcome and in good relations with the local communities. They understand each other well, because they have come close to their situation, to the suffering they have to go through in Ukraine and to their need to receive protection and hospitality in another country."

The UN Refugee Agency has called for continued international support for its Ukraine Refugee Response Plan to help provide assistance to refugees seeking safety in neighbouring countries, including Moldova. Over 126,000 refugees have received financial assistance since February 24, 2022.

Currently, approximately 2,300 refugees are being hosted in 44 UN-supported accommodation centres, while others are living in host communities. As the war in the neighbouring country drags on, the head of state has reiterated her commitment to temporary protection for refugees in accordance with European standards.
