UNICEF, World Bank partner to improve Moldova school hygiene
Moldova is taking a significant step towards improving hygiene conditions in schools by renovating and equipping sanitary facilities in over 150 institutions over the next two years.
This initiative addresses a critical need, as data reveals that nearly 150 schools currently lack indoor toilets.
"We encourage local authorities to submit high-quality projects to improve water, sanitation, and hygiene conditions in schools," said Minister Dan Perciun, highlighting the importance of collaboration between government and local communities.
The project will be supported by international partners like UNICEF and the World Bank, contributing to the modernization of 142 schools. Additionally, the state budget has allocated 25 million lei to upgrade facilities in another 25 schools, with project proposals expected in February.
The need for this intervention is evident from a recent assessment of 589 schools, which revealed concerning statistics:
- 175 schools rely on both indoor toilets and outdoor latrines.
- 61 schools lack indoor toilets altogether, forcing students to use outdoor facilities.
- 393 schools have inaccessible toilet cabins for individuals with reduced mobility.
By addressing these issues, the project aims to create a more dignified and healthy learning environment for all students and teachers.
