Moldova's new EU integration leader: Gherasimov takes charge
Cristina Gherasimov was sworn in as Moldova's new Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration on February 5th, 2024. She takes on the crucial role of steering the country's negotiations with the European Union.
Gherasimov, a seasoned diplomat with over 15 years of government experience, previously served as Secretary of State at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration. Accepting the challenge, she declared, "I am honoured and committed to working tirelessly to bring Moldova closer to the European Union."
President Maia Sandu praised Gherasimov's qualifications, stating, "She has the experience and expertise necessary to lead our EU integration process." Prime Minister Dorin Recean echoed the sentiment, calling her appointment "a historic moment" and expressing confidence in her leadership.
This appointment follows Moldova's June 2023 positive candidacy recommendation from the European Commission. However, significant hurdles remain. Reforms focused on strengthening the rule of law, combating corruption, and improving the economy are essential to meet accession criteria.
Gherasimov's leadership will be critical in navigating these challenges, with the ultimate goal of securing Moldova's place within the European Union.
